Property Description

The Schoolhouse is a unique property. Built in 1856 by The Duke of Sutherland as a free church school for the local crofting children, it has been masterfully converted and renovated to a very high standard. The building was originally split between the school on the north side and the teacher’s house on the south side. The owner has cleverly linked the two properties together creating a good flow between rooms. Upon arrival at The Schoolhouse in Dalhalavaig, you are immediately impressed with its size and elevated position from the small Highland road. The gardens are huge, and there is parking for more than five cars.

Entrance to the property is via the side door by the parking area. The old doorway leads through a boot, drying and utility area and into the main school room with vaulted ceiling. It’s incredible and has a real wow factor. The old school room has fixtures and fittings from when it was actually a school, and interestingly the owner went to this school and was the last pupil before it closed, so there is a lot of personal history here to hear about too. The renovation is stunning and incorporates the original fixtures, fittings and features brilliantly. The room has a games area at the point that you enter, in the centre of the room there is a large wood burner with seating around it and then at the opposite end there is a master double bedroom area that can be curtained off.

From the centre of the school room there are two staircases. One leads to a galleried area above the games area, where there is a large flatscreen TV and seating area. The other staircase leads to bedrooms and a brilliant family bathroom. The double bedroom has a small door in the corner of the room that leads through to a twin bedroom, and this room has a door that leads through to one the staircases mentioned in the school room.

Beyond the school room, and through the master double bedroom area, there is a door that the owner created to connect the school with the attached teacher’s cottage. Through this door and into what was the cottage you enter a living room with an open fire. The kitchen has many unique and amazing features, including a very impressive and large wooden breakfast bar/counter top. The kitchen links to a well-designed sun room with dining area. This room has great views across the garden and to the hills. From the kitchen there is also another door leading to a staircase up to the first floor.

By staying here you are also getting the opportunity to explore an area unsurpassed by another across Scotland and possibly Europe. The county of Sutherland across the north and west of mainland Scotland offers space and tranquillity found almost nowhere else. It is one of the most sparsely populated landscapes in Europe. The walking and cycling opportunities are endless, but what really separates this area is the star gazing opportunities because of how dark it is (few people living in the area), as well as the game fishing and bird watching at local RSPB Forsinard. The North Coast 500 is a few miles away from The Schoolhouse so visitors can spend time exploring the wider area, or use this as a stop-off and pause whilst making the epic journey round Scotland. Beach 6½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 6½ miles.
