The local village is a pleasant mixture of old and new, retaining much of its rural character with traditional Sussex cottages and pleasing modern developments. There are several village greens carefully preserved and maintained giving an attractive open appearance. Forest Row has become a shopping centre for quite a wide area and virtually every trade and profession is represented amongst the small shops and businesses that still provide a personal service. The population of the village is quite diverse and dynamic, largely due to the presence of Michael Hall School and Emerson College, and over the years the village has become something of a centre for organic produce and services - witnessed by the presence of award-winning Tablehurst and Plawhatch farms, Cyrnel Bakery and the Seasons.
Ashdown Forest is also located nearby, originally a deer hunting forest in Norman times, now the largest free public access space in the South East. It is a great place for walking and enjoying spectacular views over the Sussex countryside and is known the world over as the ’home’ of Winnie-the-Pooh. Enjoyed by the wildlife and providing inspiration for artists, authors and lovers of the countryside. Walkers can enjoy the tranquillity of tiny villages with their traditional Sussex pubs serving hearty food and local ale. The Ashdown Llama Park, Barnsgate Manor Vineyard, the Bluebell Railway and Sheffield Park Gardens are just some of the local attractions. Beach 25 miles. Shop and restaurant 100 yards, pub 250 yards.
