In the county town of Westmorland, Appleby is a historic market town sitting along the River Eden in the beautiful Eden Valley. Full of charm and character, the eclectic history of the town is evident straight away. The market crosses, mark the site of the original market, the unusually wide main street, Boroughgate, runs from the cloisters to the castle entrance. A fine mix of cafés, traditional pubs and independent retailers offer something for everyone. Sitting on the Settle-Carlisle railway line, guests may wish to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the wider area. The Pennine Way, Coast to Coast walk, Westmorland Way and Cumbria Cycle Way are all within easy access. North Lakes, stunning Ullswater and the pretty town of Keswick are a short drive away. Likewise the Yorkshire Dales can be enjoyed by heading south from Appleby. South Lodge is very well placed for guests who wish to stay near and enjoy Appleby on their doorstep, or for those wanting a central base from which to travel a little further.
