This quirky old town house is close to the heart of Whitby, surrounded by independent shops, characterful cafés and trendy gin bars. If you wish to be in the hub of this bustling little town, this is a great place to be.
Huxley House has a lot of history, the owner has peeled back layers of plaster and chipboard to reveal some of the property’s original features, including the brick fireplace which houses the wood burner, a wonderful focal point the family can gather round in the evenings listening to the crackle as the flames dance invitingly. There are beamed ceilings and the staircase spirals up to the third floor, where you will find the attic bedroom with a seagull’s view from the windows over the rooftops.
There is so much to see and do in Whitby, with scenic coastal walks, a diverse range of events and festivals and a fascinating history to discover. Over the famous swing bridge, which opens throughout the day for the passing boats, you have the cobbled old town, with the 199 steps leading up to the iconic Whitby Abbey. Arguably the world’s best fish and chips come from Whitby, no trip is complete without sampling the freshly caught seafood while on a stroll down the pier. Within a short walking distance from Huxley House you have the golden beach stretching all the way to the aptly named Sandsend.
Surrounding Whitby is the atmospheric North York Moors, with rolling hills laced with heather turning from vivid purple to autumnal oranges and browns as far as the eye can see. Free range sheep roam the countryside, you may also spot wildlife such as grouse, colourful pheasants or even deer. There are some picture perfect coastal villages and towns to visit, both in the sunshine where you can soak up the rays on the beaches. If you like atmospheric views, there’s something thrilling about watching the waves break as they whip the sea into a frothing foaming frenzy. For those who love the outdoors you can follow the Cleveland Way cliff top footpath and explore the nearby scenic towns of Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes, Runswick Bay and even as far as Scarborough if you are a keen hiker. Or take in the sights on horseback, steam train, boat or canoe!
After a long busy day of discovery and making memories, return to Huxley House where you can reflect over a steaming cup of coffee or a cheeky glass of wine or two. This property is large enough for families or a group of friends for memorable breaks away together. Beach ½ mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 20 yards.
